: Phone-"trouble".

I have an HTC Desire. Not a Desire HD, or Z, or whatever other letters they've put on newer models, but a plain old Desire, the first in the series. I've had it since May of last year, I think, which mans I've had it for almost one and a half year. To some people, that is unthinkable. Some people feel the need to upgrade their phone every time there's a new model out there (*cough* Apple-freaks *cough*). But I don't. I'm happy with my phone. Well... More or less.

There are two reasons why I sometimes feel like I should think about maybe getting a new phone. The first reason is the battery life. When I bought this phone almost a year and a half ago, short battery life, and the need to recharge the phone almost every day, was expected from smartphones. I don't think there were any really good models that had a particularly long battery life back then. Except iPhones maybe, but I wont touch those. Looking at the advertised battery life on some of the new phones now, if they are true, it's a completely different story. I'm tired of having to recharge my phone every night, and maybe even more than that if I actively use my phone.

The second reason is the low internal memory. Back when the Desire was created, the Android Market was still relatively new and didn't have a lot to offer, so it makes sense that they didn't put too much internal memory into it to make it cheaper or whatever. Now, however, there are lots of useful apps there, and I use quite a few on a day to day basis. The problem is that some of these apps are rather big, and I've almost completely filled up my phones internal memory. They did try to fix some of these issues by allowing apps to be partially moved to the SD-card, but many of the biggest apps doesn't have that option. So I'd love to have a phone with a bit more internal memory, so I can get more of the apps I want.

But I'm not gonna bother with it yet. It's still not a big enough issue for me, so I'm gonna stick with it for now. I don't really feel like spending any money on it at the moment either. Maybe after Christmas.

  1. As for the battery life, recharging on a daily basis is probably not gonna change if you actually use your phone. Sure, some models MIGHT get 2 days if left mostly untouched, but truth is, big screens use lots of power. iPhones needs recharging daily aswell, some even more if they use it.

The low internal memory is indeed a "crappy" part of the old HTC Desire. It's somewhat better on the newer models though. Sad thing is, there's not much that can be done about it for the time being. If only they allowed you to repartition or something, that would probably help.

You could try flashing it with a new ROM, like http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ as they should pack a little less of the preinstalled apps for the device. However, it takes some knowledge and well, it's a little hassle. :)

  2. You might be right about the battery life, but comparing the advertised battery life on my phone with the advertised battery life on newer phones, there seems to be a significant increase. But yeah, I guess it really comes down to how much you use it. I think even my phone can go for two days straight if I don't touch it.

One of the phones I looked at, the Samsung Galaxy S2, seems to have a huge amount of internal memory compared to the Desire. The Desire, I think, has only 512MB, and the S2 has 16GB. That seems more than "somewhat better". But I guess the S2 is a rather extreme example of a newer phone.

Eh, I'd rather not, to be honest. I might experiment with something like that on my Desire after I've gotten a new phone (if the Desire still works), but I don't want to risk it now.
